Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay, located on Sri Lanka's remote east coast, is the island's surfing mecca and one of the top surf destinations in the world. This small fishing village has transformed into a beloved backpacker and surfer haven while maintaining its laid-back, authentic character. The main break, known simply as "The Point," offers a long, perfect right-hand wave that attracts surfers from around the globe. From April to October, when the southwest monsoon brings consistent swells to the east coast, the lineup fills with surfers of all levels enjoying waves that can peel for up to 400 meters. Beyond the main point, numerous other breaks cater to different skill levels. Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm offer mellower waves for beginners and intermediates, while Baby Point provides gentle waves perfect for those just learning. Board rentals and surf lessons are readily available throughout the village. Arugam Bay offers more than just surfing. The surrounding area includes beautiful lagoons teeming with wildlife, ancient temples, and excellent safari opportunities at nearby Kumana National Park. The village's collection of beachfront cafes, restaurants, and reggae bars creates a perfect atmosphere for sunset drinks and making new friends.
