About Kandy

Kandy, Sri Lanka's last royal capital, is a city steeped in history, culture, and natural beauty. Nestled in the hills of the Central Province and surrounded by lush green mountains, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered the cultural heart of the island. The city's crown jewel is the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of Buddhism's most sacred sites. This magnificent temple complex houses what is believed to be a tooth of Buddha himself, attracting pilgrims from around the world. The annual Esala Perahera festival, featuring elaborately decorated elephants, traditional dancers, and drummers, is one of Asia's most spectacular religious processions. The serene Kandy Lake, created by the last Sinhalese king, offers peaceful walks along its palm-lined shores. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, one of the finest in Asia, showcase an incredible collection of tropical plants, including a stunning orchid house and the famous Avenue of Royal Palms. Kandy is also an excellent base for exploring the hill country. The surrounding tea plantations, traditional arts and crafts, and the opportunity to experience authentic Sri Lankan culture make it an essential stop on any Sri Lankan journey.
