Sigiriya
An ancient rock fortress rising 200 meters above the jungle, featuring stunning frescoes and water gardens.
About Sigiriya
Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is one of Sri Lanka's most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient rock fortress rises dramatically 200 meters above the surrounding jungle, offering visitors a glimpse into the country's rich history and architectural genius.
Built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, Sigiriya served as a royal palace and fortress. The king chose this remarkable location for both its defensive advantages and its ability to showcase his power and sophistication. Today, the remains of his palace, elaborate water gardens, and the famous mirror wall continue to amaze visitors.
The climb to the summit involves ascending over 1,200 steps, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding plains, forests, and distant mountains. Along the way, you'll encounter the legendary Sigiriya Frescoes - beautifully preserved paintings of celestial maidens that have survived for over 1,500 years.
The ancient hydraulic systems, including sophisticated water gardens with fountains that still function today, demonstrate the advanced engineering capabilities of ancient Sri Lankan civilization. The surrounding archaeological site includes elaborate boulder gardens, cave temples, and the remains of monastic complexes.
