Dambulla

Dambulla is home to Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved cave temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been a place of worship for over 2,000 years. The Golden Temple of Dambulla, perched on a massive rock rising 160 meters above the plains, contains some of the most remarkable Buddhist art in the country. The cave complex consists of five main caves, adorned with over 150 Buddha statues and nearly 2,100 square meters of murals depicting scenes from Buddha's life and Sri Lankan history. Some of the cave paintings date back to the 1st century BC, making them among the oldest in the country. The largest cave contains 57 Buddha statues arranged around a 14-meter reclining Buddha carved directly from the rock. The intricate ceiling paintings, depicting Buddhist cosmology and legends, create an awe-inspiring atmosphere. Each cave has its own character and treasures, requiring several hours to fully appreciate. Beyond the caves, Dambulla serves as an excellent base for exploring the Cultural Triangle. Its central location makes it ideal for day trips to Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, and Anuradhapura. The town is also known for its wholesale vegetable market, the largest in Sri Lanka.
