Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya, often called "Little England," is Sri Lanka's highest town, sitting at an elevation of 1,868 meters in the heart of tea country. This charming hill station offers a refreshing escape from the tropical heat, with its cool climate, misty mountains, and distinctly colonial atmosphere. The town's British colonial heritage is evident in its architecture, with Tudor-style houses, a colonial-era post office, and the historic Grand Hotel and Hill Club evoking a bygone era. The cool climate made it a favorite retreat for British planters, who established the tea estates that now carpet the surrounding hillsides. Tea is the lifeblood of the region, and visitors can tour working tea factories to learn about the production process and sample some of the world's finest Ceylon tea. The endless rolling hills of bright green tea bushes create one of Sri Lanka's most photogenic landscapes. Beyond tea, Nuwara Eliya offers excellent hiking opportunities, including trails in Horton Plains National Park where World's End cliff provides dramatic views. The town is also known for its beautiful gardens, including Victoria Park and the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, which burst with color during the flower season.
