Polonnaruwa

Medieval capital showcasing remarkably preserved ruins, giant Buddha statues, and ancient palace complexes.

About Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's medieval capital from the 11th to 13th centuries, represents the pinnacle of ancient Sinhalese civilization. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers some of the best-preserved ancient ruins in the country, providing a fascinating window into a sophisticated past. The city's highlights include the Gal Vihara, a group of four Buddha statues carved from a single granite rock face. The 14-meter reclining Buddha and the standing figure with crossed arms are considered masterpieces of Buddhist sculpture and rank among Sri Lanka's most iconic images. The Royal Palace complex showcases the grandeur of the medieval kingdom, with the ruins of the seven-story palace of King Parakramabahu still impressive despite centuries of decay. The council chamber, audience hall, and bathing pools reveal the sophistication of court life. The Quadrangle, a raised terrace containing a compact collection of religious buildings, is the ancient city's highlight. Here, the circular Vatadage, the unique Hatadage tooth relic house, and various stone inscriptions demonstrate the architectural and artistic achievements of the era. The vast Parakrama Samudra, an ancient irrigation reservoir, remains in use today.
