Udawalawe National Park

The best place in Sri Lanka to see wild Asian elephants, with herds gathering at the reservoir year-round.

About Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park is Sri Lanka's premier destination for elephant sightings, offering near-guaranteed encounters with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Unlike Yala with its focus on leopards, Udawalawe is all about the elephant experience, and it rarely disappoints. Home to around 700 elephants, the park's open grasslands make wildlife spotting exceptionally easy. Large herds can often be seen feeding, bathing, or crossing the roads, providing incredible photo opportunities. The Udawalawe Reservoir, which the park surrounds, acts as a magnet for elephants especially during the dry season. The park's landscape is a beautiful mix of scrubland, grasslands, and wetlands, supporting diverse wildlife beyond elephants. Water buffalo, sambar deer, wild boar, crocodiles, and numerous bird species including colorful kingfishers and majestic eagles make regular appearances. Adjacent to the park, the Elephant Transit Home is a remarkable rehabilitation center for orphaned elephant calves. Visiting during the 9 AM, 12 PM, 3 PM, or 6 PM feeding times offers a touching experience watching baby elephants being cared for before their eventual release back into the wild.
